Hollywood has a long track record of movie adaptations of bestselling books. But with feature docs attracting greater audiences and screen time, bestseller-to-doc is becoming an increasing viable option for non-fiction filmmakers, too.

Join the National Film Board of Canada for a discussion of the opportunities and challenges of adapting best-selling literary works to the documentary screen.

Case studies explored include two NFB docs-in-development: "Paris 1919," based on the bestseller by Canadian historian Margaret MacMillan, co-produced by Galafilm and the NFB and directed by Genie-winner Paul Cowan; and "The Trouble with Islam," a documentary adaptation of Irshad Manji’s controversial bestseller.

The CTV Canadian Documart provides a platform for Canadian producers and those partnered with Canadians to compete for the world’s richest prize: $100,000 in development funding is split between the three winners in this competition. Pitchers vie for the the interest of a panel representing dozens of broadcasting organizations. $50,000 goes to the winner; $30,000 for the project in second place; and $20,000 for third.
