Pat Ferns to Launch New Format at MIPCOM Junior
(Banff, Alberta, Canada, October 3, 2001) Pat Ferns, president
and CEO of the Banff Television Foundation is launching a new format
at MIPCOM Junior, as part of the Cannes’ markets’ Conference Program.
Case studies of success will focus on children’s animation and feature
three of the world’s leading producers. Michael Hirsh, chairman
and CEO of Nelvana will present Franklin, Vincent Chalvon-demersay,
managing director of Marathon International will speak about Totally
Spice and Atsuya Hirooka, producer of youth and children’s programs
of NHK will discuss Cardcaptor Sakura. Mr. Ferns will then moderate
a panel discussion with the three executives. The session is scheduled
for Saturday, October 6, at 3:00 p.m. at the Martinez Hotel, the
principal venue of MIPCOM Junior.
This new format continues Mr. Ferns’ regular MIP-TV and MIPCOM
appearances and follows on the heels of two recent successes: “Is
Prime Time Past Its Prime?” at Le Nombre d’Or in Amsterdam and the
chairing of the prestigious Public Debate of the Juries at the Prix
Italia in Bologna. The event at the Prix Italia was a new initiative
of festival director, Carlo Sartori and Prix Italia board member,
Ursula Von Zalinger who runs the Prix Jeunesse. Ms. Von Zalinger
recommended the format to Mr. Sartori after Mr. Ferns’ acclaimed
two-day presentations at the 3rd World Summit for Children’s Programs
in Thessaloniki earlier this year.
Collaboration between the world’s leading festivals is being taken
a step further at MIPCOM. The newly formed international Television
Festivals association (iTFa) has scheduled a luncheon meeting to
ratify rules and regulations for membership and to discuss the association’s
activities. The top international television festival brands are
joining forces to ensure scheduling to avoid conflicts of date,
reinforcement of standards and a determination to celebrate the
best of international television programming. For a list of iTFa
members, visit www.televisionfestivals.com.
The Banff Television Foundation is a management organization for
some of the world’s leading television and new media industry events
including the Banff Television Festival (June 9 – 14, 2002), the
World Congress of History Producers (October 19 – 22, 2001), the
World Congress of Science Producers (October 25 – 28, 2001) and
the Alliance Atlantis Banff Television Executive Program (November
2 – 9, 2001 and January 11 – 18, 2002). Its mission is to inspire
innovation in content creation, celebrate excellence in programming
in Canada and abroad and provide learning and business opportunities
for creators and other industry professionals.
