Global Television Grand Prize Winner to be Screened at IBC and
Nombre d'Or
(Banff, Alberta, Canada, September 10, 2001) A special screening
of the $50,000 Global Television Grand Prize winner from the 2001
Banff Rockie Awards, La terre des âmes errantes (The
Land of Wandering Souls) produced by La Sept ARTE/INA, will
take place at this year's IBC and Nombre d'Or Festival in Amsterdam,
September 14 - 18, 2001. This French documentary was the big winner
at the 2001 Banff Television Festival winning three awards including
the Rockie for Best Social and Political Documentary, the Sony International
Critics Prize and the Global Television Grand Prize of $50,000 for
best overall entry. Attending the screening will be Pat Ferns, president
and CEO of the Banff Television Foundation, along with the documentary's
producer, Cati Couteau.
La terre des âmes errantes documents the laying of
the first fibre optic cable across Cambodia, juxtaposing the history
and lives of the workers and the Cambodian people, with the arrival
of an "information superhighway" among people who struggle
for the bare necessities of life. The $50,000 prize money will be
used to buy equipment for the director, Rithy Panh, so he can continue
his important work of documenting the history of the Cambodian people.
In addition to attending the screening at IBC and Nombre d'Or,
Mr. Ferns will also be moderating the session, "Is Prime-Time
Past its Prime?" on Sunday, September 16 and presenting an
update on the 2002 Banff Television Festival. Each year, the Festival
celebrates excellence in programming with its international Banff
Rockie Awards competition presenting awards in 14 different categories.
Submissions for the 2002 competition will be accepted beginning
in November with an entry deadline slated for February 22, 2002.
