CBC Airs Television Special on the 2001 Banff Rockie Awards Co-hosted
by Ian Hanomansing and Julie Snyder
(Banff, Alberta, July 20, 2001) Going for Gold: The Banff
Rockie Awards 2001, often referred to as the "Olympics
of Television", comes to the screen for the fourth consecutive
year on CBC-TV. Produced by the Banff Television Foundation, this
one-hour special highlights the winners of the 22nd Banff Rockie
Awards Show. Co-hosted by CBC News: Canada Now anchor Ian
Hanomansing and Quebec superstar Julie Snyder, Going
for Gold airs on CBC-TV Friday, August 10 at 7:00 p.m. (7:30
p.m. NT; 8:00 p.m. in Alberta) (Please check local listings).
A salute to the best television programs from around the world,
Going for Gold: The Banff Rockie Awards 2001 features award-winning
Frasier star Kelsey Grammer, acclaimed director/producer
Norman Jewison (Hurricane, Moonstruck), Canadian comedian
Steve Smith (The Red Green Show), and World Champion Aboriginal
Hoop Dancer Lisa Odjig. Kelsey Grammer is the recipient of this
year's Sir Peter Ustinov/Comedy Network Award presented by Steve
Smith, and Norman Jewison is honoured with the 2001 Lions Gate Award
of Excellence.
This year's Rockie Awards competition drew a record 1,030 programs
from around the world, of which 86 were nominated for Banff Rockie
Awards in 14 various categories. Going for Gold presents
excerpts from each of these nominated programs and special award
winners, including the $50,000 Global Television Grand Prize and
the Sony International Critics Prize winner, La terre des âmes
errantes (The Land of Wandering Souls), and the $25,000
NHK President's Prize winner, Wild Asia: Creatures of the Thaw.
The Banff Television Foundation is the management organization
for some of the world's leading television and new media industry
events including the Banff Television Festival. The Festival attracts
close to 2000 television program makers and online content creators
form around the world and features over 60 hours of seminars, keynote
speakers, master classes, pitching opportunities and the annual
Banff Rockie Awards competition. Next year's Festival, BANFF 2002,
takes place June 9 - 14, 2002 at the Fairmont Banff Springs.
Going for Gold: The Banff Rockie Awards 2001 is produced
by Tanis Booth and directed by Michael Watt. The producer for CBC
Television is Steve Glassman. Executive producers are Pat Ferns,
president & CEO of the Banff Television Foundation and Kerry
Stauffer, the Foundation's director of production.
