Demon in the Freezer Takes Top Prize in the First CTV Canadian Documart at BANFF 2001

(Banff, Alberta, June 13, 2001) A new pitching session at the Banff Television Festival, the CTV Canadian Documart, today awarded prizes totaling $100,000 to three winners who presented documentary projects to a packed house of Festival delegates and 28 commissioning editors from around the world. The winners were chosen from among seven pitching finalists pre-selected from 140 submissions to this new pitching opportunity established by the Festival and funded by CTV to encourage mainstream popular documentary production.

Each of the seven finalists was given eight minutes to pitch, followed by questions from the commissioning editors.

The winner of the top prize of $50,000 was Demon in the Freezer, a film about the dark side of biotechnology presented by Dugald Maudsley and Douglas Propp of Atlantic Television / Infield Productions.

Second place winner Tom Perlmutter of Primitive Entertainment Inc. takes home $30,000 for his proposal Teen Invasion, an examination of the 20th century teen culture phenomenon.

The third place winner was Anne Pick for An Ode to SPAM: The World's Most Popular Luncheon Meat. Ms. Pick of Real to Reel Productions Inc. was awarded $20,000.

The CTV Canadian Documart competition was open to Canadian independent producers and to international independent producers with a Canadian partner. The application guidelines called for projects that would qualify as Canadian content under the prevailing Government of Canada regulations or international co-production treaties. The commissioning editors at the CTV Canadian Documart today voted by secret ballot. Each pitch was assessed on its quality (worth 20% of the marks), its viability (30%) and the quality of the content and potential for the program to attract large, mainstream audiences (50%).

The CTV Canadian Documart is based on a format adapted with permission from the Australian Documart pioneered by the Australian International Documentary Conference. It is one of many pitching opportunities available at BANFF 2001. Winners of the CyberPitch, Two In A Room, and the HDTV Pitch will be announced on Pay Day, Friday, June 15, 2001.
