Canadian Director John Fawcett to Receive CTV Fellowship Prize
at BANFF 2001
(Banff, Alberta, June 4, 2001) Canadian director John Fawcett
is the recipient of this year's CTV Fellowship Prize to be awarded
at the Banff Rockie Awards Show on June 11 during the 22nd annual
Banff Television Festival. CTV president and COO and chair of the
Banff Television Foundation, Trina McQueen, will make the official
presentation. The CTV Fellowship Prize, initiated during the 10th
anniversary of the CTV Fellowship Program, is awarded to a graduate
who has experienced major success in the industry. The recipient
is also invited to attend the Festival as a CTV Fellowship mentor
to the current class of recipients.
John Fawcett is a former CTV Fellow and graduate of Canada's pre-eminent
film training institution, Canadian Film Centre (CFC). "Honouring
John with this prestigious prize is appropriate in a year we are
also recognizing the founder of the CFC, Norman Jewison, this year's
Lions Gate Award of Excellence recipient," commented Pat Ferns,
president and CEO of the Banff Television Foundation. "John
is one of a group of Canadian directors making an outstanding impact
in television and feature films and his current cult-hit, Ginger
Snaps, reaffirms what a talented individual he is." John Fawcett
joins the honour roll of past CTV Fellowship Prize recipients including
Helena Cynamon, partner/producer at Forefront Entertainment Group
and Susanne Boyce, president, programming and chair of CTV Media
Group.
A dynamic young director, John brings a wealth of enthusiasm and
vision to his work with experience in television, feature films,
music videos, and commercials. His debut feature-length project,
The Boys Club garnered five Genie nominations in 1996 including
Best Direction and he has currently completed his second feature
film, Ginger Snaps, which premiered at the 2000 Toronto International
Film Festival and was released in Canada on May 11, 2001 by TVA
International. Additional credits include Power Play "Seventh
Game", Genie-nominee for Best Direction in a Dramatic Series;
Scratch Ticket, Special Jury Award-winner at the 1995 Yorkton
Short Film Festival; The Post-Cowboy Junkies, nominated for
three Alberta Motion Picture Industries Association (AMPIA) Awards
in 1994; and Half Nelson, 1994 five-time AMPIA Award nominee.
John has also worked on various television series including six
episodes of Xena:Warrior Princess, four episodes of Power
Play, and an episode of La Femme Nikita.
Each year the CTV Fellowship Program awards 30 fellowships to emerging
professionals in the Canadian television industry enabling them
to attend the Banff Television Festival thanks to the generous support
of CTV Inc. This also includes Fellowships offered to the graduates
of the Canadian Film Centre's national Television Resident Programme
entitled, Prime Time.
BANFF 2001, the 22nd Banff Television Festival, takes place June
10 - 15 and is a week-long special gathering of television producers
and on-line content creators. Over 60 hours of workshops, plenary
sessions, keynote speakers, master classes, and market simulations
will take place including the annual international Banff Rockie
Awards celebration.
