Record Numbers Compete for Record Amount of Prize Money In 22nd
"Race for the Rockies"
(Cannes, France, April 2, 2001) With over $100,000 in prize money
at stake, the 22nd annual "race for the Rockies" drew
a record 1,030 program entries, edging out the previous all-time
high set last year. A total of 86 nominees will be competing for
the 2001 Banff Rockie Awards across 14 program categories.
The nominees, a list of which is attached, were announced at a reception
at MIP TV, hosted by Festival president & CEO, Pat Ferns; Jacques
Bensimon, executive vice president and COO; and Jerry Ezekiel, senior
vice president and principal organizer of the international program
competition.
Along with the 14 category prizes, the international jury, which
convenes in Banff on May 31 to review the 86 finalist programs,
will select two Special Jury Award winners and the Global Television
Grand Prize winner, an award which comes with $50,000 cash for the
winning producer. Three of this year's nominees are finalists for
the NHK President's Prize, a $25,000 cash award for the best HDTV
entry in the competition. In addition to the international prizes,
two Telefilm Canada Prizes, worth $20,000 each, will be presented
to the best English and French independent Canadian productions
entered this year.
It was the strongest showing in recent memory for U.S. producers
and broadcasters, who enjoyed a clear edge in the number of nominees
over their traditional U.K. rivals (and occasional co-production
partners). Germany and France, independently or as co-producers,
are strong contenders across a variety of categories as well. The
list of all countries and territories represented in this year's
Banff competition includes: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada,
Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland,
Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa,
Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United
States. All nominees for the 22nd Banff Rockie Awards will be screened
by the seven-member international jury, and the final results of
the competition will be announced at the Awards Gala on Monday,
June 11.
Besides nominees for the Banff Rockie Awards, an additional 80
programs have been selected for out of competition (hors concours)
screenings. The complete list is available online.
Three Nominees for NHK President's Prize for best HDTV entry
France, Italy, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom,
and the United States will be represented in the first annual Banff
competition for the $25,000 NHK President's Prize. The finalists
are Nova: Runaway Universe (Popular Science &
Natural History; United States); La Traviata à Paris
(Performance; Italy, France, U.K., Germany, U.S.); and Wild
Asia: Creature of the Thaw (Popular Science & Natural
History; Japan, New Zealand, U.S., and Germany). The nominees for
the NHK President's Prize, for the best HDTV entry, are also candidates
for the Banff Rockie Awards in their respective categories. A total
of 30 programs entered in the 2001 competition were eligible for
the NHK President's Prize.
