BANFF Honours Discovery Communications, Inc. with Global Television
Outstanding Achievement Award 2001
(McLean, Virginia, February 13, 2001) Discovery Communications,
Inc. the leading global real world media and entertainment company,
will be honored with one of the world's most prestigious television
prizes at the 22nd Banff Television Festival, June 10 - 15, 2001.
The Global Television Outstanding Achievement Award, emblematic
of innovation and program excellence over an extended period of
time, is being presented to Discovery Communications, Inc., which
has grown from the Discovery Channel, first launched in 1985, into
a multi-platform global enterprise with 33 networks of distinctive
programming serving more than 453 million total subscribers worldwide.
Making the announcement at the Real Screen Summit, Banff Television
Festival president & CEO, Pat Ferns, called Discovery founder
John Hendricks "one of the true visionaries of the modern media
age." Ferns also said, "Discovery's mission to help people
explore their world and satisfy their natural curiosity, clearly
has been an inspiration to producers of innovative, superior programming.
The Discovery brand is now a multi-media symbol of high-quality
content in a global marketplace."

Judith A. McHale, president and chief operating officer of Discovery
Communications.
Discovery's programming is tailored to the specific needs of viewers
around the globe and is distributed through 77 separate feeds in
33 languages in 152 countries. Discovery's 33 networks of distinctive
programming represent 14 entertainment brands including TLC, Animal
Planet, Travel Channel, Discovery Health Channel, Discovery Kids,
and a family of digital channels. Discovery's other properties consist
of Discovery.com and 165 Discovery Channel retail stores.
The winner of the Global Television Outstanding Achievement Award
is selected annually by the Banff Television Festival's Board of
Governors, a broadly-based international advisory council of CEOs
and senior executives from the broadcasting, production, and distribution

The award will be presented to Discovery Communications, Inc.,
at the special Tribute Ceremony on Tuesday, June 12. This Tribute
event is a salute to the Festival's Outstanding Achievement winners
which will also include Philips Electronics, winner of the 2001
Sonic Foundry Outstanding Technical Achievement Award.
BANFF 2001, the 22nd Banff Television Festival, takes place June
10 - 15, 2001 in Banff, Alberta and is a special gathering place
for television program producers and on-line content creators. The
conference schedule features over 60 hours of workshops, plenary
sessions, keynote speakers, master classes, market simulations,
and pitching opportunities. Early bird registration is now available
until April 1, 2001.
