By Appointment
9:00am - 10:30am
Jeannie & Peter Lougheed Bldg, The Banff Centre

Producing and Broadcasting Documentary Films: The Strategy of the #1 Pay TV System in Europe, Canal+

What kind of documentaries should a channel with 10 millions subscribers choose to attract and keep its audience satisfied? How do you find suitable slots for documentaries when movies and sport are the core of the schedule? How can you promote the documentary specials to make them an event?

Since it is pay TV, documentaries on Canal+ premium channel must be exclusive, they must be different, they must be entertaining, moving storytelling. Video clips will help us share Catherine Lamour's 18 years of enlightening experience as she takes us through the process of developing Canal+'s Emmy Award winning documentary department and through the challenge of maintaining the impact of quality and creation in a fast growing channel, and in a highly competitive environment.

Fiction Now: Pushing the Envelope

11:00am - 12:30pm
Van Horne Ballroom, Conference Centre

Are sex and violence the keys to success in an increasingly competitive fiction market? Certainly programs such as "Sex and the City" and "The Sopranos" have pushed the envelope and challenged audiences. Is this the way to go? Are there other directions that will secure the audience and beat the competition? In a global world, fiction programming is becoming more national as opposed to international. Does this spell the end of co-production, or will new approaches enable fiction to continue to be the most popular shows on television? Where should the envelope be pushed?

Banff Centre New Media Focus: Fiction - Entertaining the Lean-Forward Generations

Plenary
2:00pm - 3:00pm
Theatre, Conference Centre

The new media strand explores the ways that audiences, a.k.a. users, have entered the picture in new ways. Each session examines how this new element of audience involvement is challenging the traditional structures of television.

The DVD generation is media literate. Younger generations expect to participate as well as be entertained. Whether they invent their own characters, or respond to environments that writers and directors create, or check in with stories, story agents or game play on their mobile or other wireless devices, users have become players and inventors. This panel will examine the ways that audiences are more and more a part of the interactive experience and will investigate what this means for traditional television.

Future Watch: The Future is Wide … But Will it be Hi?

Plenary
4:30pm - 5:30pm
Theatre, Conference Centre

More and more production is being shot in wide-screen format, whether on 35mm film or 16x9 digital video, but how are audiences receiving this material? Wide-screen television has been slow to take off in Europe, and high definition has not caught on as a consumer medium. Japan is HDTV's champion but the jury is still out as to its future in North America. HDTV has a strong future in electronic cinema and other uses, but the big debate is, will HDTV make it in the home in North America? Representatives on all sides of this discussion get together to explore what happened, what is happening, and what will be our future in this new wide world.

IBC-Nombre d'Or Festival invites all who attend this seminar to join them for a cocktail immediately following the seminar. The programmes selected for this year's IBC 2001, to be held September 14 - 18th in Amsterdam, will be announced.

Future Watch is a strand exploring the leading edge of new technologies and new platforms for media content. From HDTV to interactive media we explore the creative challenges and the shape of our future world.
