Thursday June 14, 2001 - Corus Children's Day
Breakfast with the Pioneers
8:00am - 8:45am
Cascade Ballroom, The Fairmont Banff Springs
In the 60s, the National Film Board of Canada was a hub of creativity.
Two different men, with different language and cultural backgrounds,
operating in two separate units, were part of a revolution that
radically changed the film medium and created the concept of "Cinéma-vérité."
Join Colin Low and Michel Brault as they discuss what it was like
to invent a concept that was imitated all over the world.

Technique and Content
1960 and 2000, two important periods at both ends of my career
in films. Around 1960 the search began for an ideal camera that
would permit filmmakers around the world to capture life and its
reality, in French we used to call it "la caméra-stylo."
Forty years later at the eve of the new century, this dream camera
appears to be born in the form of a digital instrument. What has
happened between these two dates? What responsibility has been deposited
in filmmakers' hands?

Summit on Children's Media, CBC's Adrian Mills explores the issues
in children's programming with some of the world's leading players.

Virtual Virtuality, for the Arts' Right of Reply
The new forms of creation are based on dynamic and reactive
environments. The virtual is not only digital and immaterial, it
is also a new kind of representation that takes the "visitor"
into account as the key for a scrambled message. Maurice Benayoun
will talk about how to consider the art of conceiving the rules
of the virtual world as the core part of interactive storytelling.
He will also present his fledgling concept of immersive television
along with his first work done with this "Parallel Architectures."

Past Lives
Alex Graham of Wall to Wall Television presents a master class
on the making of a new genre of television - the "living history"
program. Alex originated and executive produced "The 1900 House"
that aired on Channel 4 and on PBS last year to great acclaim and
huge ratings. More recently, Wall to Wall made "The 1940s House"
for Channel 4 which was an even bigger success than its predecessor.
Wall to Wall is currently in production on "The Frontier House"
for Channel 4 and PBS and "The Edwardian Country House"
for Channel 4.
What are the particular demands of this new kind of "reality"
programming? Can these programs tell us anything about history or
are they just entertainment? And is there a future for this kind
of format? Alex will discuss these and many other issues in a master
class illustrated with research materials and clips from the programs.

Who is Navarro?
Tito Topin will guide us through his process of developing a police
officer character within the framework of a non-traditional television
series. The character's environment, his family, his interpersonal
relationships, his interactions with his co-workers will be explored.
Tito will examine how the officer perceives his own actions and
the conclusions that result and will explain how the police station
is both the forum where the dramas of modern society are played
out and the cornerstone of the series. What is the life expectancy
for a character like Navarro?

Banff Centre New Media Focus: Children's - Has Television Lost
a Generation?
Plenary
2:00pm - 3:00pm
Theatre, Conference Centre
The new media strand explores the ways that audiences, a.k.a. users,
have entered the picture in new ways. Each session examines how
this new element of audience involvement is challenging the traditional
structures of television.
Huge efforts are afoot to make certain that youth are computer
literate. But, frankly, they are often miles ahead of their teachers,
parents and the media world. Children in Japan, Finland, Brazil,
and the UK create adventure games, story experiences and a social
life using their cellular phones. For them technology is a toy!

Understanding America: Children's
Plenary
3:15pm - 4:15pm
Theatre, Conference Centre
The United States of America is the world's largest media market.
Understanding America is a strand exploring aspects of doing business
with the USA and in the USA. The United States has been an inventive
source of children's programming from public television's Sesame
Street, to Disney, Nickelodeon and beyond. However, Canadian animators,
European producers, and other creators have found their way into
this important marketplace, and we hear from those stimulating the
American market from without and from within. Where is kids' programming
going in this vast and competitive market?
