CBC/Radio-Canada Keynote Address:
The Ingenuity Gap in a Fragmented World

Plenary
9:30am - 10:30am
Van Horne Ballroom, Conference Centre

Can we create ideas fast enough to solve the very problems - environmental, social and technological - that we have created? Tad Homer-Dixon coined the term ingenuity gap to describe this critical gap that exists between our need for practical ideas to solve these complex problems and our actual supply of ideas. In this fragmented world that is rapidly exceeding our intellectual grasp, Homer-Dixon states that "an idea is only an idea if it causes unease, debate and reflection." Banff believes that the concept of an ingenuity gap is truly a new idea and that this keynote address will provoke all three reactions: unease, debate and reflection.

Audience with Attitude

Specialist Option
11:00am - 12:30pm
Theatre, Conference Centre

"Power to the People" is the theme of the BANFF 2001 new media stream. In this session we will look at how audiences with attitude create situations where the user becomes a collaborator with the artist, designer, and producer. What can we learn from the mass popularity of a service such as Napster? Some would suggest that users want to be veejays and deejays and are not interested in stealing copyright. Teenagers in Finland have re-purposed their cellular phones and created a playful social subculture. Artists are making spaces and contacts for stories and play environments where a new generation of audience become participants. This session will explore how audiences have changed, how we can meet their needs, and what new opportunities participatory media has to offer.

Master Class: Producing - Pierre Chevalier

By Appointment
2:00pm - 3:00pm
Jeannie & Peter Lougheed Bldg, The Banff Centre

This session is presented in French.

Conquering the Gap Between Film and TV Drama
Pierre Chevalier, Head of Drama at ARTE France, will tell how he has worked to bridge the gap between film and TV drama. He enjoys the challenge of working with the limitations of television and finds his main constraint is financial, as he works with ten times less money than his colleagues at other French networks. This forces him to be creative and to work with a hands-on approach. Chevalier supports ARTE's talent-driven editorial line that stresses the importance of the filmmaker's vision, rather than the script. During the past ten years he has backed over 305 titles (480 hours of programming) made by 252 directors; 67 of which were foreign directors and 42 were first films. Pierre Chevalier has been instrumental in such prestigious; and sometimes edgy projects such as "Underground" by Kusturica, "Kingdom" by Lars vonTrier, "Marius et Jeannette" by Robert Guediguian, "Beau Travail" by Claire Denis and "Ressources Humaines" by Laurent Cantet.

The Rights Stuff

A little more than a year ago, a 65 foot, 105 tonne, sea-ready tugboat entered the Atlantic Ocean. Happens all the time? Not when it sports a huge shiny red ballcap, five-foot smile, and eyes that move.

Andrew Cochran uses a case history approach to detail how strategic rights management has enabled his long running preschool character Theodore Tugboat to grow as a multi-platform property - from morning TV to first children's character on the web to becoming an ocean-going international icon for water safety - pulling a collection of branded products in its wake.
