PROGRAM COMPETITION

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

For the purpose of selection, jury and Festival screenings, all official entries should be in the NTSC standard and will be accepted on BETACAM and BETACAM-SP. For pre-selection screenings, entries will be accepted in VHS PAL (low band only) but Betacam NTSC replacements will be required for those entries selected as nominees. NO DIGITAL FORMATS OR BETACAM PAL, PLEASE. Entries shot on HDTV or post- produced in HDTV, or other widescreen formats, should be entered in Betacam NTSC or VHS PAL formats and appropriately letterboxed for viewing without distortion. HD replacement tapes will be required for those entries short-listed for the NHK President's Prize. Do NOT send HD tapes for pre-selection screenings.

All entries on cassettes will be shown to the selection committee, jury, international delegates, and the public in the condition in which they were submitted. To ensure the best possible presentation of an entry, the following suggestions are made:

  • There should be colour bars and "O" VU Tone at the head of each tape. The duration should be from 30 seconds to one minute.

  • Following this, there should be black to the start of the program.

  • There should be clean transitions in a series of tapes, with black at the end of each segment or episode.

  • No film leaders or VTR countdowns should appear after the beginning of each cassette.

  • There should be no commercials or commercial blacks on the tapes.

  • Please ensure that BETACAM entries have a longitudinal SMPTE drop-frame time-code track.
  •
