PROGRAM COMPETITION

SELECTION & AWARDS

Entries which meet the minimum conditions of eligibility may be submitted to the Festival for screenings by a selection committee. Only programs chosen as nominees by the selection committee will be viewed by a distinguished international jury appointed by Festival organizers. Additional programs may be selected for out-of-competition screenings.

Producers of programs judged best in each of the categories will receive replicas of "The Banff Rockie," an original polished bronze sculpture created by Alberta artist Roy Leadbeater. The Global Television Grand Prize, including $50,000 cash, will be awarded to the producer of the program judged "Best of the Festival." The NHK President's Prize, including $25,000 cash, will be awarded to the best entry shot on HDTV or post- produced in HDTV. Two Telefilm Canada Prizes will be awarded, including $20,000 for the Best Independent Canadian Production in English and $20,000 for the Best Independent Canadian Production in French.

The jury may also make two or more Special Awards for outstanding achievements deemed worthy of special recognition.

The international jury will decide category prizes and all other awards. Those who have programs chosen as nominees, and those who have programs selected for non-competitive screenings, will receive appropriate certificates of recognition suitable for framing.

Nominees will be announced prior to the Festival at MIP-TV April, 2001 and winners will be announced during the awards ceremony on Monday, June 11, 2001.
